This statistical release presents estimates of vehicle compliance with speed limits in free-flowing conditions on roads in Great Britain.
Speed data from a sample of Automatic Traffic Counters from the Department of Transport which were chosen to exclude locations where external factors like junctions and sharp bends might restrict driver behaviour.

These statistics provide insights into the speeds that drivers choose to travel at when free to do so, and show that in 2022, 50% of car drivers exceeded the speed limit on 30mph roads, compared to 45% on motorways and 11% on national speed limit single carriageway roads.
